I was going to make a post about going back home and the abhorrent poverty and decay in the Appalachian mountain area. About how the area is developing, as cities do, but the character is being drowned out by chain restaurants and shopping. The landmarks of my youth are now just faded brick and stone. There is just a mix of emotions- amplified since I have moved back to the South - about all there is to love/hate about these places. But yet somehow the south gets deep into a person and it all just seems right and proper despite the neglect. The pictures I carry back are less souvenirs and more reminders of the places I have come from and the remnants of a continued fascination with this life I was raised in. The folks in those mountains represent a group of individuals that give their bodies everyday to their work and embody the stereotypes with a sense of pride (attributes I still admire and don't always understand). Here is to the start of some undetermined, unnamed, personal photo project dedicated to the South and the mountains I still can't shake.
