Colonial sand tube worms (Phragmatopoma californica) help create critical bottom structure along the coast of Central and Southern California, especially in areas of high sand transport. They also look pretty neat up close! These guys were making a go of it at South Monastery.
#CapabilityBrown surveyed estate @ #Woodchester nr #Stroud#Gloucestershire in 1782 for Lord Ducie Moreton. Brown’s account book shows he visited Woodchester Park in September 1782. His surveyor Spyers spent 4 weeks at estate preparing a survey, though his plan was not signed. Brown’s total charge, including Spyers’ expenses, was £20 7 shillings & 6 pence (£29,000). The park has elements in Brown’s style - string of 5 ponds, terraced walks & rides from house into surrounding wooded valley. Spyers’ survey refers to 'New Kitchen Garden' & 'New Pond'. Brown’s work at other estates often involved replacing formal gardens around a house with sweeping lawns, as part of his naturalistic style so he may have advised this at Woodchester. Although Brown did not have time to design & oversee work on this scale at Woodchester, he may have given ideas for planting. Within 20 years of Brown’s visit, woodland had been cleared to create vistas up side valleys at Woodchester. The valley floor was covered with grass & specimen trees in C18th & 19th. Brown died in 1783 & two years later Woodchester passed to Lord Ducie Morton’s brother, Francis. Landscaper Humphry #Repton visited estate in 1810 & may have influenced redesigned landscape. In C20th estate was sold several times & was eventually split up. Woodchester Park Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) within site is important for its diverse range of habitats, flora & fauna including a nationally important breeding colony of greater horseshoe #bats , a range of #invertebrates including nationally #rare#flies & #snails as well as rare stinking #hellebore , scarlet tiger #moth & silver washed #fritillary#butterfly .
