LEARNING CHANGES THE STRUCTURE OF YOUR BRAIN – BRAIN PLASTICITY

Neuroplasticity, or brain plasticity, refers to the brain’s ability to change throughout life. The human brain has the amazing ability to reorganize itself by forming new connections between brain cells (neurons). In addition to genetic factors, the environment in which a person lives, as well as the actions of that person, play a significant role in plasticity.

Neuroplasticity occurs in the brain:
1- At the beginning of life: when the immature brain organizes itself.
2- In case of brain injury: to compensate for lost functions or maximize remaining functions.
3- Through adulthood: whenever something new is learned and memorized.
John E. Morley, MD, director of St. Louis University's Division of Geriatric Medicine and author of The Science of Staying Young, recommends the following exercises to sharpen your mental skills:
1. Test your recall. Make a list — of grocery items, things to do, or anything else that comes to mind — and memorize it. An hour or so later, see how many items you can recall. Make items on the list as challenging as possible for the greatest mental stimulation.
2. Let the music play. Learn to play a musical instrument or join a choir. Studies show that learning something new and complex over a longer period of time is ideal for the aging mind.
3. Do math in your head. Figure out problems without the aid of pencil, paper, or computer; you can make this more difficult — and athletic — by walking at the same time.
4. Take a cooking class. Learn how to cook a new cuisine. Cooking uses a number of senses: smell, touch, sight, and taste, which all involve different parts of the brain.

and no, it was not "cheat day". I don't believe in cheat days.
listen, I lived the cheat-day-lifestyle. I literally (like  l i t e r a l l y) starved myself monday - friday/saturday and on the weekends I ate everything in sight. everything. then I felt horrible, full, bloated, ashamed, angry.. and at some point I couldn't stop after one day. eating everything I wanted felt so good... I've had binge-eating disorder for 3 years now.

the cheatday-mentality and -lifestyle might work for some. I personally hate it. I still suffer from it, I am still recovering, and I don't want anyone to feel the way I felt. I want a lifestyle where I can have everything I want. on any day. if that's salad or chocolate. I want a lifestyle that makes me feel good.

🍬Someone reached out to me today and told me their doctor wanted to put them on statins because their total cholesterol was slightly high.  The doctor didn't care about this persons diet or lifestyle but was ready to just hand out a station Rx like it was candy

🌳With the rising number of people being put in statins, we really have to evaluate if we are attempting to treat the symptoms or the root cause?

🤦‍♂️This study showed that physically active individuals put on statins actually fared worse than their counterparts who weren't put on statins. No matter what the situation, I think it's important that we take a step back and look at the root cause rather than try and put band aides on the symptoms

Who needs fitness and nutrition accountability & motivation?!? Lemme tell ya what, I DO. This is part of my job, but it doesn't mean it's always easy to workout everyday and make healthy choices. THANKFULLY I always have my tribe to rely on and motivate me everyday be BETTER. In TWO weeks, I will be hosting my next accountability challenge Fall Into Fitness. Falei mais cedo do psyllium, e fiquei de postar a receita do pãozinho. Fácil e saboroso! .
 Pão low carb c/ psyllium 📍3 ovos
📍3 colheres de sopa de água 📍50g de parmesão ralado 📍01 xícara de farinha de oleaginosa (uso 1/2 de far de linhaça e 1/2 de far de amêndoas )
📍01 csobrem de psyllium 📍01 pitada de sal 📍01 csobrem de fermento de bolo 👉🏻Bata bem os ovos com a água (retire a película ). Junte o parmesão e bata mais. Acrescente a farinha, e em seguida o psyllium, o sal e temperos. Por último o fermento. 
Coloque em formas de silicone, no forno pré-aquecido a 180oC por 20 a 30 min até dourar.

I learned today that I need to have dinner prepped so that when I come home from clinical I don't eat everything in the house while making dinner. Needless to say I am exhausted and my feet hurt. Also 15% cranky because I'm right back to having no time to do anything (run &a gym) Waking up at 4:50 to be at the gym at 5 am tomorrow because I know I'll have no energy after standing for 12 hours 😱 But here's dinner ➡️ Balsamic glazed potatoes and asparagus. The recipe said 40 minutes but it turned to be like over an hour and it made me crankier 🙂

On my way home from work today I saw a kid, probably 14, wearing a t-shirt with this on the front and it made me stop and smile. It is so true and something that I think a lot of people forget! It is easy to make excuses saying “oh I don’t have time to get to the gym” or “I can’t afford a membership” but these are all simply excuses as the gym is literally everywhere.🌳 Take a walk on your lunch🏃, take the stairs instead of the elevator, get off the subway one stop early, etc. There are so many simple little things you can do each and every day to get in some activity. Have kids? Can you take them for a bike ride? Play catch in the park? ⚽⚾🏈🏀🌳 Just don't look right at the sun during an eclipse. I mean you're safe for another few years but just sayin 😄

I also smiled because so many young kids these days just spend their evenings inside playing video games/computer games/being on their phones so I was just so pleased to see a kid outside playing around with this saying on his shirt.

It is only complicated if you make it so. Now I am not saying you can get the same workout in a park that you could in a fully stocked weight room🏋, but if it is a matter of zero activity or a 15 minute walk on your way into work, the walk wins every time.

8. CHEATMEALS: los cheatmeals en cuestiones de metabolismo los aplicamos para darle ese shock luego de estar tiempo en regímenes alimenticios. Vienes de vacaciones, no necesitas ningún shock porque no llevas ni una semana en una alimentación netamente balanceada, así que no te engañes tú mismo y aguanta la pela 🙃 .
9. ALCOHOL: Es el primer enemigo cuando queremos perder grasa, y no porque sean muy calóricas las bebidas, sino que el hígado es el encargado de limpiar el alcohol de la sangre, y es este el que también degrada las grasas y carbohidratos en moléculas más pequeñas para utilizarlas como energía. Cuando consumimos alcohol, para de metabolizar los lípidos y carbohidratos y se concentra en sacar todo el alcohol de la sangre durante 3 días, lo que significa queda frasas y carbohidratos se almacenan. Así que no te sabotees.

10. Ten paciencia y sé constante. Como ya sabemos , una comida mala no te hará perder todo el trabajo hecho, pero una buena tampoco hará que arregles todos los desastres de vacaciones. Lo bueno es que el cuerpo tiene memoria muscular 🤗 y si tienes una buena base lograras volver a la condición en la que te encontrabas, o inclusive mejorarla 💪🏻

2017: I used to think that changing my lifestyle for a healthier alternative, was some sort of sacrifice. I believed that by losing the freedom to eat whatever 'Take out' or sugar infused rubbish I wanted, I was somehow being punished, and that I was cruelly disadvantaged because I wasn't able to eat whatever I junk wanted and still look and feel great. Having to consider my body's nutritional needs and being disciplined seemed like such a chore. But as I slowly started to introduce healthier foods, moderated my intake and started to consider the damage I was doing to my body, my mindset started to shift,  and now looking after myself doesn't feel like a burden anymore at all. Cardio ✔ 😥😥 rolled my ankle but I ran through it and I haven't had any pain so I think it's fine. It felt good to get into the woods again, and I don't hate my average mile time considering the amount of incline.

3. CARDIO: cuando hacerlo? A la hora que puedas! Que el cardio en ayunas es el único que sirve.. NO! Que con el cardio en ayunas pierdes músculo ? NO.. que en la mañana es mejor, que en la noche antes de acostarte es El ideal, tampoco! Debo un post del cardio en ayunas, que prometo que está por salir, pero tiene mucho contenido y no sé cómo hacer que este en IG

4. AGUA: cada vez que escucho a alguien diciendo yo me tomo mis 8 vasos de agua al día, yo tomo mucha agua 😒me da un microinfarto! No podemos esperar a sentir sed para tomar agua, al sentir sed ya el cuerpo empezó a estar deshidratado. La retención de agua se soluciona con más agua, si!! Mientras más tomemos, el cuerpo expulsa más y no retiene porque sabe que constantemente estamos ingiriendo líquido.

5. CARBOHIDRATOS: limítate a consumir carbohidratos solo en la mañana de bajo índice glicemico como la avena, y rápida absorción y índice glicemico medio como el arroz para después de entrenar, para que recuperes rápido los músculos y podamos lograr su fortalecimiento.

6. PROTEINA: Acompaña todas tus comidas de proteína para que el cuerpo trabaje más cada vez que comas, ya que es más difícil digerir una proteína que un carbohidrato. .
7. GO GREEN: Come muchos vegetales verdes, son los que tienen menos carbohidratos netos, altos en fibra, y te ayudan a la saciedad, además del sin fin de minerales y vitaminas que proveen.

Back to lifting today - only 8 days to go! I tried to get up at 5AM to work out today, and instead woke up at 7:30. I'll try again tomorrow - I really liked having it done first thing in the morning. .
