HISTORY REASSIGNED TO FASHION: Piet Mondrian wrote the words above in his 1937 essay entitled “Plastic Art and Pure Plastic Art”. Revisiting them eighty years later, it is hard to understand why fashion as an artistic medium has not been included in all of the art theory’s discourses, failing to appear as their subject and inspiration. However, the good news is that we can reread, revisit and reassign these texts. So next time you want to connect art and fashion and an image of a 1965 Yves Saint Laurent Mondrian Dress comes to mind, go further than the surface- and read Mondrian’s texts - allowing fashion to be their subject.
