I'm doing the"Films That Make You Cry" list from this cool book and I'm going to get quite personal with this one.I bawl my eyes out every time I watch this documentary and it always leaves me emotionally wrecked.Having had my own struggles with mental illness for years,I truly identify with Amy's suffering and it's hard to watch someone spiral downwards in such a devastating way. This doco really has something to say about the way mental illness is represented in the media and it's a topic I have very strong feelings about. I love Amy Winehouse and her passing really affected me.I think this is such an important doco that will hopefully help people understand mental illness -what fuels it and what helps it-much better. #amywinehouse #amydocumentary #sadfilms #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #cinephile #cinephilecommunity #documentary #asifkapadia #film #coffeeandfilm #emotional

I'm not sure why it's taken me this long but I finally just watched Memento and it was amazing to say the least.
Nolan has been on a role since his early days.

Closing out my evening by finishing up Roberto Rossellini's War Trilogy. The third and final film tells the story of an innocent 12 year old German boy whose life has been torn to shreds by the war. Without any more delay, it's Germany Year Zero. #CriterionCollection #GermanyYearZero #RobertoRossellini #1948 #RobertoRosselliniWarTrilogy #WarTrilogy #EdmundMeschke #DeutschlandImJahreNull #film #cinephile
I just read the screenplay (shooting script) alongside the movie. Very interesting how much they moved around during the editing process. - I also got way more details which I missed watching the movie on its own. Impressive work that movie is!

MOVIE #REVIEW: #Dunkirk is visually stunning and gorgeously shot. What #ChristopherNolan is able to do with a camera is nothing short of fantastic. He puts the audience right in the thick of the battle of Dunkirk and makes us feel every twist and turn from the planes in the sky, every splash and sway from the boats in the ocean, and every sound and explosion from bombs being dropped on the British soldiers. The editing is fantastic and keeps the tension and excitement high because of it. Nolan's use of practical effects over digital ones serves to enhance the look, feel, and authenticity of this movie. The cinematography is stunning, and #HansZimmer does it again with a haunting, ticking score that elevates the final product. Our one big critique of the movie is Nolan's choice to keep the bulk of the characters nameless and (relatively) faceless. Some people will love this choice, but it was a bit of a rub for us. We wanted to be able to root for these individuals and wish for their ultimate survival but we didn't feel a connection to them since they aren't really developed. Despite this minor critique, "Dunkirk" is yet another solid offering from Nolan and gives a unique perspective on how to approach a war film when they are a dime a dozen in Hollywood. Our rating: 8/10!

I remember this movie being fun and hilarious, but to be honest with this recent revisit, it's definitely not how I remember it. I don't hate the movie, but it's not as good as I remembered it. Michael J. Fox plays a teen who finds out he can turn into a werewolf willy-nilly. Or whenever he's pissed. They don't really establish the rules. Instead of being a creature of the night and feasting on people, he's really good at basketball and widely accepted at his school for it. I guess the whole thing is am allegory for puberty and being somebody you're not to fit in, but it doesn't really work. Meanwhile, his really cute friend Boof likes him for who he is regardless and he's just kind of a dick to her and would rather try to get with the popular girl. You've seen this trope a million times and they don't do anything new with it here. Except he's a wolf, I guess. The scene that really stopped the show for me, because I began laughing at how ridiculous it was, is when he goes to his annoying friend Stiles to tell him he's a wolf, but Stiles is afraid he's going to tell him he's gay, so Michael J. Fox has to assure him not to worry, he's only a werewolf. I guess it was the homophobia of the '80s and I'm probably reading into it too much, but it's so silly. Stiles is that character older people writing movies thought would represent the cool kid, but in real life he's obnoxious and annoying. He's also always wearing t-shirts with sayings on them that are kinda funny, so I guess he has that going for him. Apparently, Michael J. Fox hates this movie and hated making it, but he doesn't sleepwalk through it. I don't think it's funny, the message seems confused, the transformation scenes aren't impressive (it's mostly cut aways) and I found the whole thing to be overwhelming. Or I'm getting too old. #nowwatching #nowplaying #teenwolf #michaeljfox #roddaniel #susanursitti #jameshampton #jerrylevine #atlanticreleasingcorporation #shoutfactory #screamfactory #comedy #fantasy #bluray #blurayreview #moviereview #moviecritic #filmreview #filmcritic #cinephile #1985 #goonreviewsteenwolf

Game of Thrones S7 E2 recap + thoughts 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
-----------------------------------------------
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
-----------------------------------------------
Most surprising moment: Hot Pie's return. Not only was it a sweet and tender moment to behold, but it's also great to see Arya catch up with past acquaintances. Plus, she was informed of the Battle of the Bastards and how Jon Snow was able to take back Winterfell and wipe out the last remaining Bolton. Now, all we're missing is Gendry. Speaking of him, is he still rowing that boat? He could've rowed to Essos and back again by now.
-----------------------------------------------
Saddest moment: Nymeria and Arya's sorta reunion. Finally, after six seasons, Arya meets her direwolf again in the woods and she is now leading a pack of wolves. At first, when the wolves appeared, I feared for Arya's life but a familiar figure then showed up behind her. It's Nymeria and she doesn't recognize her master for a sec there. However, she begins to remember, and we have a fleeting moment of happiness right there. That quickly turned to extreme sadness as Nymeria refuses to follow Arya and she leaves with her wolf pack. The line "That's not you" and look on Arya's face afterwards perfectly encapsulates all the emotions of that scene.
-----------------------------------------------
The "throw-up" moment: Jorah's greyscale surgery. Game of Thrones has never been shy to show stuff that will make people sick but this five-minute scene has been the most squeamish of them all. I won't get into full detail about what happened but I'll just say that Sam performed the surgery on Jorah out of respect for his father and also the fact that no one else is willing to do anything about it. We do get one seamless and cool albeit equally disgusting scene transition though.
-----------------------------------------------
Filler moments: None 'cause this episode was jam-packed with plot-propelling storylines and every character got their chance to shine. Well, maybe Cersei's storyline in here can be considered filler.

----------------------------------------------- Saddest moment: Nymeria and Arya's sorta reunion. ----------------------------------------------- The "throw-up" moment: Jorah's greyscale surgery. ----------------------------------------------- Filler moments: None 'cause this episode was jam-packed with plot-propelling storylines and every character got their chance to shine. Well, maybe Cersei's storyline in here can be considered filler. ----------------------------------------------- Continued ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast from 1946 remains the definitive version for me of the famous fairytale. Cocteau successively blends magic, surrealism and ultimately fantasy in such a unique and incredible way. The story centres around Belle a stunning woman whose father is sentenced to death for picking a rose from the Beast's garden. Belle instead takes her fathers place at the Beast's castle but the pair fall in love. The film is unlike anything I have ever seen it is quite spectacular and a special film for me. The beauty of its images and the Beast and Belle's love immediately stood out for me. I will always be drawn to this film which I believe to be a true masterpiece of French Cinema and one of my all time favourite films. Jean Cocteau also made another surrealist film Orpheus but Beauty and the Beast remains my favourite picture of his. #beautyandthebeast #jeancocteau #frenchcinema #film #cinema #movies #filmbuff #cinephile #filmlover

I love Christopher Nolan!
Dunkirk is one of the year's best films and I highly recommend it.
If possible, watch in IMAX!

"We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

*** BITS AND ROBS *** BRADY CORBET (director, The Childhood of a Leader 2015): "He’s interesting, he’s charismatic, he’s compelling, he’s handsome. And I thought, that it would really give weight to the first 20 minutes of the film. So I hired him for all of those reasons. I hired him because the role was written for a young man that was a bit younger than the female character, handsome and English, so I thought of him." #robsessed #robpattinson #robertpattinson #robert #pattinson #thechildhoodofaleader #bradycorbet #charlesmarker #indiefilm #independentfilm #cinephile #quote

Okay ya'll, The Night of the Hunter totally blindsided me. Like this is now in my top 10 of all time. And it's a freaking debut.

Behind the camera of this masterpiece sits actor-turned-director Charles Laughton. Hunter is actually the only feature film he ever directed because it was so horribly received upon its initial release in 1955 (seriously what were critics thinking?) The Night of the Hunter tells the tale of a coniving preacher (a delightfully menacing Robert Mitchum) who marries a widow (Shelley Winters) with a treasure hidden somewhere on her property, and only her two small children know where to find it.
The screenplay is penned by literary legend James Agee. The film is gorgeously shot in the style of German Expressionism. And Laughton employs music to absolutely magical effect. The music is so present, it's almost a unique character. The scene in which the children ride in a skiff under a starry sky is simply one of cinema's greatest offerings.
The Night of the Hunter is a dreamy experience. I have no trouble calling it one of the greatest American films ever made. I mean this title deserves to be mentioned with Citizen Kane, Lawrence of Arabia, and Vertigo. The only drawback is the fact that Laughton never directed another film.

Seriously do yourself a favor and watch this.

Movies 2017 - 189. Dunkirk (2017; written and directed by Christopher Nolan) 🌮🌮🌮🌮 (4 tacos)

Allied soldiers surrounded by German troops plot to evacuate the beaches of Dunkirk. If you'll look up there, you'll note that I gave this film four tacos. That's a pretty solid rating. It typically indicates that the movie is very good and definitely worth seeing. Dunkirk was an excellently made film that I think everyone should see. It is a prime example of Christopher Nolan's brilliance as a visual storyteller. The action here drives the story forward and Nolan stages everything with perfection. There are few movies this year that crackle with this much tension. Every moment in this film builds further stress upon the soldiers. Nolan frames everything beautifully. It is a good thing the film's visuals work so well because as far as dialogue is concerned, the film suffers. This leads me back to my point. This a four taco film based upon its visual storytelling and its ambition. I respect every second of Dunkirk. Truthfully, though, I didn't love it and will probably never watch it again. I was never a part of the camp that disparages Christopher Nolan as cold. There is a contingency who claims that Nolan's characters are emotionless, which leads you to not feel any kind of attachment to them. This couldn't be any further from the truth for me. There is an emotional through line all of Nolan's previous works, including the Batman series. You connect with the characters and hope for the best outcome for all of them. There is a complexity to them and that makes them all the more intriguing. Here, I see that criticism. I didn't care about any of these characters. There was no one character that I was particularly interested in when the story returned to them. Perhaps this was intentional. Perhaps by showing the grander scale, Nolan is trying to show that this war affected so many and the soldiers at the center of the story could be anyone. It doesn't really work for me. Kid Kulafu (2015)

I'm not a really big fan of sports drama films like this. But I must say that Paul Soriano's "Kid Kulafu" is one of those rare instances where you get captivated by a film and it's characters without you realizing it.
Robert "Buboy" Villar exceptional portrayal of the young Manny Pacquiao really captivated me. He is such an amazing actor and deserves much of the credit for making the film engaging. Cesar Montano and Alex Medina were also really good as his uncle and father respectively. Khalil Ramos' portrayal of Eugene Barutag really pinched my heart. So far, this is Ramos' most affecting role, second to his role as Felix in "2 Cool 2 be 4gotten". And lastly, Alessandra de Rossi shines in her portrayal of Dionisia, Manny's mother. She is definitely one of the most underrated actresses today. I can't wait to see her in "Kita Kita" (2017).
Though the film could use a better ending as it will leave you wanting for more, this sports drama based on the life of Manny Pacquiao is truly emotionally engaging. Kudos to Direk Paul and the cast.
Rating : ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ /5 stars

#Interstellar 🎬
This is a science fiction film directed by Christopher Nolan. The film narrates the story of the future where Earth is slowly becoming uninhabitable; Ex-NASA pilot Cooper, along with a team of researchers, is sent on a planet exploration mission to report which planet can sustain life.😅
It's one of the most beautiful and heart-wrenching thrilling film. The film is thought-provoking, visual treat, drama weaved brilliantly and a triumph in filmmaking. It's more than going beyond infinity but with its flawless and hard to believe third act, its an edge-of-the-seat film. Entertainment isn't a word to describe Interstellar, it's beyond- making a thorough depiction of future life, human drama, the relativity and the puzzle intrigues immediately. No more other than Christopher Nolan could have handled this so efficiently. With great Direction, breathtaking Cinematography and effective Sound Design are the plus points but the film runs at 2 hours 45 minutes. The film subtly shifts to an intercutting pattern making it more interesting. And the cherry on the top is Hans Zimmer's symphonic and splendid background score.👍
Matthew McConaughey is a gem and a great actor indeed. Anne Hathaway is a delight while Michael Caine is superior as he is always. Jessica Chastain just steals the limelight, one of the best supporting role. Matt Damon in a cameo is superb.😇
It's an extraordinary journey which can leave you satisfied as well as unsatisfied with its end and the interpretations. Interstellar is a stellar film.✌ _______________________

Here's an interesting quote from T.F. Mous:
"That particular scene consists of five different parts and took two months to construct. Yes, it’s true, we used a real corpse of a young boy. We asked the police at a nearby station if they knew of a boy who had died of an accident or fatal disease. We waited for two months and we had no news from the police. Then one day, the police called me and said that they had a body. They said that if I wanted the body of the boy, we had to collect it in less than an hour. I asked why they had imposed a one hour deadline and they said that doctors were going to prepare an autopsy and see what caused this boy to die. Shooting on Man Behind the Sun was stopped and I went to see the parents of the dead child. I explained to them that I needed to film the police autopsy and what the film was about. The parents replied that although their son was dead, they were happy to have him cut apart in the film as it was their way of doing something positive for the Chinese people."
-T.F. Mous on using a real life body to film a anatomy scene in Men Behind the Sun
.
Hmm. I...uh....excuse me while I claw my fucking eyes out. That or listen to some Lady Gaga--she's positive enough.

If you had asked me what film I thought was frightening as a youth, chances are I would have said The Exorcist, but now as an adult, the films that genuinely startle me are films about the horrors of man. Movies about home invasion really scare me, too! The scariest film I've seen as an adult is Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom. That film is my worst nightmare put on screen. I just saw a movie that challenges the fear factor from Salo, and it's a movie called Men Behind the Sun.
.
I've known about this film for a long time, but I had refrained from watching it because, at this point in my life, I have ZERO interest in watching disgusting horror movies. A friend and I were discussing the events in this film during lunch one day and I finally caved and saw it and holy shit, to say it's disturbing is an understatement. Since it's release, it's taken a life of its own as extreme cinema, and it's easily dismissible as that, but as I sat through this, it felt like the filmmaker, T.F. Mous, was making a genuine film about an unspeakable atrocity during a bleak period in human history. The film is about Unit 731, a unit of the Japanese army during WWII that conducted bizarre experiments on prisoners of war.
.
It left an impression on me because some of the scenes in the film seemed authentically sketchy. I did some research on the making of the film and came across an interview with T.F. Mous talking about his process in making the film, and the lengths he undertook are quite shocking and, frankly, unethical and exploitative...but oddly genuine in effort, yet extreme in execution. It's a strange dynamic. The film, if anything, truly highlights the horrors of war. I got the message and definitely won't be seeing it again. Scary stuff.

One of the most stunningly beautiful shot films ever. The darkness, both literal and figurative, is so powerful, that each beam of light is a story unto itself. The film also contains one of the most moving scenes I've seen in recent memory. Brilliant! #cinephile #movienerd #filmgeek
Mary: "what abt Jesus?"
Cap: "love that guy, do what he says"
love how Marc Webb directed this sunset scene in Gifted. one of the best moments in the film. just the right amount of cheese 🧀🧀

The Social Network (2010)
A production quite different from his past ones, this isn't something akin to Se7en or Fight Club. I still like it - an exciting biography for the man we know well and whoever involved significantly in the birth of one of the greatest companies on earth! .
//
"And I'll bet what you hated the most is that they identified me as a co-founder of Facebook Which I am. You better lawyer up, asshole. 'Cause I'm not coming back for 30%. I'm coming back for everything." #eduardosaverin .

Looks like people are about to die again in creative ways this Halloween. The Saw franchise is back with Jigsaw & maybe the infamous jigsaw killer isn't as dead as he seems.

Favorite daily cinematic scene: HAPPINESS (1998). Or, as I like to say, me relating to a Jon Lovitz character more than ever in my life 😂❤🎥

Dunkirk will take its place alongside the finest war films in cinema history. Christopher Nolan does not simply tell us the story of the heroic rescue of over 300,000 soldiers; instead, he places us on the three battlefields of Dunkirk: the beach, the air and the sea. I entreat my followers who trust me to see this movie. Nolan shot the film for the IMAX screen, so I also encourage you to see it in that format. Dunkirk was a visceral experience for me; I was physically exhausted when I left the theatre, but for all the right reasons. This is filmmaking at its finest and I would expect Dunkirk to be a front runner for the Oscar. Note: for those of you with an aversion to extremely loud sound, see it in a standard format. #cinephile #dunkirk
